The power center of US & the world politics has a number of places that you must visit at-least once in your lifetime. From the US Capitol, to the White house. The Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. These are the places that you’ve seen thousands of times in movies & TV shows. The best part about visiting Washington is the proximity to New York. Its only 4 hours by road from New York & there is an excellent connectivity by Greyhound & Flixbus. Train service is also there but you can save lot of money if you travel by bus and moreover the train takes almost same time as a bus does. There is the Washington Dulles Airport as well if you are directly coming into Washington. You can travel to most places in Washington by walking.

Itinerary: I’ll provide a one day itinerary for Washington. Lets start our journey from the Union Station Bus Terminal. It might sound a bit absurd but the bus station building is very impressive in itself and if you are coming by Greyhound bus, you’ll probably be coming via this terminal. It might seem a long walk but the best way to observe all the imposing government buildings in washington is if you walk from Union Station bus terminal towards the US Capitol Hill building. This is the building that is shown in most places where Washington DC’s reference is given (way more than White House) as this is a more impressive building than the white house. From here if you look towards the Washington Monument, the stretch of grass that you see is the national mall and it has a number of famous building to the left and right of it. Lets start by walking towards the Smithsonian National Museum of Air & Space. After visiting that you can cross the mall grounds & walk towards National Gallery of Art Sculptor Garden. This is a free to go place that has a very soothing environment and various sculptures erected in the garden. A good photo-op place. as soon as you exit this garden, you’ll come across the National Archives gallery. You would have seen this in a number of movies. Then if you walk further down the road, you’ll reach the famous Smithsonian National museum of American history. You can expect to see a long queue in front of this museum. Then once you get out of this place, there is the National Museum of African American history. The building stands out from the rest of the buildings due to its ultra modern architecture. You might want to get online booking done for this in advance. Then moving from there, on way to white house you can visit the white house Visitor center, which has a free entry and if you are on a tour, then it will probably start from here. Then you can walk towards the white house. Now, I should warn you that the White house in actual is NOT as impressive as any of the other important buildings in Washington. But it certainly is the most important one as the president of the USA, the most powerful man resides here. So a visit to this place is an absolute must. You would probably find a number of people protesting in front of white house as well. That is a common thing. Sit in the park across the White house and take in the surroundings. You might get a peek at the president himself.

From there you can walk to the Washington monument or else you could walk towards the Chinatown if you feel hungry & want to have a good Chinese food. If you are walking towards Washington monument, then you would cross the canova lion statues on your right. From Washington monument you can walk towards the World War 2 Memorial. This is a very beautiful monument where you can see the Washington monument & Capitol Building on one side & Lincoln memorial on the other side (across the Lincoln memorial reflecting pool). Spend some time here to regain all the energy lost by walking till now. Then walk towards the Vietnam War memorial. Read the name of 58,000+ Americans who lost their lives during the Vietnam war. from here, walk to the Lincoln Memorial & go up the stairs to see the famous sitting Abraham Lincoln Statue. Observe the beauty of the Washington from this vantage point. From here you can go to Korean War Memorial. Now, from here, you can either cross the Potomac River and go to Pentagon or towards the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. From here walk to Franklin D Roosevelt memorial and then Jefferson memorial.
